The Second Week

Wednesday saw the University of Leeds students split in to two groups.

Katie, Mos, Katie and Lizzie headed to 1000 Hills Community Helpers. There, they delivered workshops to two groups of their community caregivers, talking about sugar and salt content in food and what too much of these things can do to you, as well as touching on diabetes, exercise, meal portions, and much more.
Here are the girls in between the two sessions, discussing what went well...

Karen, at 1000 Hills, was really pleased with how the girls did and gave them each a bracelet to say thank you. The caregivers were asking a lot of questions and got involved in the sessions, and Karen was thrilled to see their interest.

Meanwhile, Esther and Lizzie headed to Hillcrest AIDS Centre and worked with some of the gogos they support. On Wednesday's the grannies come in for parenting classes, to improve their skills and work with children in their communities and families.

On Thursday, all of the girls headed to Hillcrest AIDS Centre and worked on various things they needed help with there.

In the meantime, I visited a couple of the students we sponsor, as well as headed back to First Step Right to work on a linking project with their grades 4 and 5 (they're linking with a local Beavers group, sharing videos and learning about each other)
I managed to meet with Candace, the new CEO at Hillcrest AIDS Centre and have a good chat about upcoming things at the Centre and how things are going in general.
GAGA sponsor a bed in their Respite Unit and we're thrilled to have a spot on their new donors board outside the centre. This project has such a wonderful impact on individuals, we're really proud to support them.
We managed to get a donor sign installed for the new classrooms at First Step Right School - I'll post a larger photo later to see if you can spot your name! Here are Lungile and Nombuso, the two pre-school teachers outside the new classrooms.

Thursday  evening class planning:

The students split in to groups again on Friday morning and delivered classes to the young children at 1000 Hills Community Helpers.

We headed on to First Step Right as it was their last day of school. There was singing and dancing and they thanked the University of Leeds volunteers for getting involved. It was wonderful!

I said my goodbyes to some of the grades 4 and 5s who've I've gotten to know really well this year and who are heading on to other schools next year.

This week, the students also took part in the Fear Factor  Challenge!! - Eating a crocodile burger surrounded by crocodiles!

I met with Wendy on Thursday - she is one of our rising stars. She's studying accounting and is doing amazingly well!

We went on to the Drakensberg for the weekend and spent Saturday hiking to Tugela Falls (the highest waterfall in Africa, and second highest in the world!) . The students loved the experience, and have really enjoyed seeing as much of South Africa as possible.
